About Our Shop

Dakota Cabin Quilts is a full-service quilt shop located at 218 South Main, Hettinger, ND. We began as a home-based business in September 2003, then moved into a corner of the Fried Photography studio in November 2003. Thanks to Dawn and Duane Fried’s generosity and help, our customers could shop for quilt kits, books, patterns, thread, and notions. In May 2004, we purchased a beautiful 2700 square foot retail store-front from the City of Hettinger. Our dream of having a full-service quilt-shop was realized.

We offer a variety of 100% cotton quilt shop fabric, specializing in Hoffman and Moda designs. We carry a complete collection of Aurifil 50 weight cotton thread, and many unique quilting notions and necessities. Holly Taylor from Moda is our favorite designer, and we carry her complete collections in brushed cotton, as well as the accompanying Gathering Friends patterns and books. We have many beautiful flannel and brushed cotton fabrics, North and South Dakota quilters like warm and cozy fabrics. The complete collection of Hoffman 1895 hand-painted batiks are always available, as well as hundreds of triple-dyed batiks by Hoffman, Princess Mirah, and Melrose.

There are a couple of things that set www.dakotacabinquilts.com apart from other online quilt shops. We always charge exact shipping and never charge a handling fee. We work very hard to package your items carefully and ship them safely and affordably. We also believe in developing an ongoing relationship with our customers through a weekly e-newletter. Each weekend, Laura writes a short note to over 12000 customers, including the latest store news and arrivals, as well as coupons for free shipping and other discounts. Many customers tell us that the first thing they do on Sunday morning is have a cup of coffee and read our newsletter. Newsletter members are eligible for regular $100 online shopping spree drawings.

Wesley and Laura travel as vendors to many quilt shows and quilt retreats. Our schedule is posted on this website, and will be updated as we confirm new bookings. We enjoy promoting our business in this manner, as it gives us a chance to meet quilters from across the region who shares our love for the art of quilting.

Our shop currently has ten employees. Rose is a wonderful seamstress and quilter from Lodgepole, and continues to amaze us with her ability to make beautiful quilts at lightning speed! Visit the quilt gallery for some examples of her work. In the summer of 2004, Phyllis joined our team, and she is an invaluable addition, specializing in internet and in-store customer service. Joyce joined us in the summer of 2005, helping with the business side of things. Barb and Gayla followed, and they spend countless hours cutting kits, organizing our shop, and providing excellent customer service. Micaela, a college senior, has spent countless hours on website maintenance and marketing projects. Laurie keeps our books in balance, helps with long-term planning, and specializes in customer service. Tara, a high-school senior, arrives promptly after school, and tirelessly cuts, kits and fills internet orders. Ellen joins us on her days off from her "real job" (she is an amazing pediatrician), cutting kits, filling orders, and helping us "get organized". Larissa has moved to Billings, Montana, is happily married to our friend Leif, and deserves the credit for the creation of our wonderful website.

Wesley and Laura continue to work side by side (through good days and bad days) as husband and wife, and business partners. Our friends Cindy, Dode, Katie, Marla, and many others help us out when they can... folding kits, tidying up, and providing a lot of "moral support".

Since our website opened in July 2004, we have been busy filling orders, answering questions, and striving to provide excellent customer service, top quality quilting goods at fair prices, and special order items. We are proud of our work, and we thank you for visiting our site. Come back often!
